Biographical note
|
N. Popescu-Bodorin received his BSc in Mathematics and Mechanics from the University of Bucharest, and MSc in
Geometry, System Theory and Optimization from Politehnica University of Bucharest, Romania.
During his MSc he also took a complementary specialization in Programming and Reduced Order Models and a complimentary fellowship as a Research Assistant in Electrical Engineering granted by Politehnica University of Bucharest.
He finished his PhD in Computer Science (2007-2011) under the coordination of PhD. Prof. State Luminita, and worked as a teaching assistant (2004-2010) and as a lecturer (2010-2013) in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science Department of Spiru Haret University where he founded and leaded the Artificial Intelligence and Computational Logic Laboratory and taught Computational Logic, Computer Simulation, and Artificial Intelligence (course, seminar, laboratory).
He is currently working as a Lecturer and as a Technical Expert (Research & Development, Computer Science & Engineering) in Lumina Multidisciplinary Research Excellence Center (University of S-E Europe Lumina), where he founded and leads the Applied Computer Science Testing Laboratory.
His areas of interest are artificial intelligence, computational logic, modal/fuzzy/crisp/n-valent logics, image processing, biometrics, algorithms, information theory, robotics & automation, computability and system theory, etc.
During his PhD study (summarized here),
he introduced:
- two versions of Circular Fuzzy Iris Segmentation (CFIS, CFIS2),
- Gabor Analytic Iris Texture Binary Encoder (Hilbert Encoders), DWT-Hilbert Encoder, Haar-Hilbert Encoder, Haar-MultiscaleHilbert Encoder and mixed Log-Gabor & Haar - Multiscale Hilbert Encoder,
and he became the first who:
- challanged the common belief that the possibility of formulating paradoxically self-reference sentences naturally belongs to semantically closed languages (A. Tarski),
by defining Cognitive Binary Logic - a monoaxiomatic, complete, consistent, and self-contained (semantically closed) formalization of the binary logic in which the Liar Paradox was successfully deconstructed,
- formulated the principle of objectivity in propositional logic,
- proposed a logical and neural-evolutionary model for Iris Recognition, which is the first neural approach that proves outstanding power of discrimination between inter- and intra-class comparisons,
- showed that parcticing iris recognition in a logically consistent manner means to recover from iris biometric data the binary fuzzified meaning of two concepts: "genuine" and "imposter" comparisons, and to mimic the correct binary biometric decisions given by a human agent during a Turing Test,
- introduced the concepts of evolutionary digital identity and logically consistent biometric system and illustrated their utility,
- introduced the Turing-Zadeh Modeling as a Soft Computing technique for intelligent computational modeling of the physical systems and successfully applied Turing-Zadeh Modeling in Iris Recognition.
He is currently working on the logic foundations of (Consistent) Biometry and Iris Recognition and on applying advanced intelligence paradigms to Iris Recognition.

Top 6 Professional Characteristics [^ top ^]

-
Getting Organized:
I'm steady and calm in situations that others find overwhelming. When I'm faced with ever-increasing demands, when I'm under pressure to keep up the pace, I approach my work with focused attention and careful planning. I usually manage my time well. I have the ability to call upon the appropriate resources at a moment’s notice in order to advance the project or deliverable. I'm are constantly monitoring, thinking ahead, and making timely adjustments in order to avoid obstacles and keep things moving on their track.
-
Understanding the Business:
I'm always learning. Therefore, I think I have earned a seat at the table. I have regular interaction with different Scientist, Professors and Editors from around the world, and they see me as a credible partner. I speak the language of science. I'm able to analyze and speak intelligently about various scientific topics toward a clear and correct point of view. The payoff is that - for example - two very important journals seek me out regularily to ask my opinion about potential editorial decisions.
-
Creating the New and Different:
I'm usually able to envision a future that no one else sees and invent things that haven’t been imagined. I focus a lot of my time on gathering information and asking good questions. Because I value all points of view and look broadly for information, I'm able to make connections across many fields and use analogies that help me think differently about a given problem. I don’t judge. I don’t hem people in. I believe that many people with different ways of looking at the world will always outperform any one individual’s ideas (this is why I'm convinced that the forced retirement practiced now in Romania is completely wrong; my mentors were always slightly aged people and they learned me a lot). I'm not afraid of failure. When running on the edge topics, failing often is inevitable and failing early is a real luck that can save pretious time for me. I prefer to explore paths blazed by others.
-
Keeping on Point:
I have discipline. Despite all of the tasks and challenges vying for my attention, I sort through competing priorities and I stay focused. My favorite tricks for doing this are setting aside blocks of time, finding ways to minimize interruptions and making decisions quickly. I know that it’s not enough to be busy. I believe that concentrated focus will allways produce meaningful accomplishments.
-
Managing Up:
So far, I managed my career well. I know what I want in my career. I'm proactive in positioning myself (my career aspirations and interests) to mentors/persons who will influence my career trajectory. I'm working hard, and therefore, I'm fully confident in my future.
-
Inspiring Others:
I usually have a compelling vision, and I'm able to paint a picture of the future that ignites enthusiasm. I'm able to translate my vision in a way that others begin to share the vision. I like to help my students seeing how they fit into the bigger picture, and this leads to better engagement and stronger performances. I infuse others with a sense of optimism and possibility. I build effective teams and rally team members around a common purpose and get everyone working toward a common set of goals.
